For the next day and a half, Juniper was desolate. She moped. She took long walks. She sat on the rocks in front of Summerfield’s cottage—Cal’s cottage. She waited for someone to come out and join her, but no one did. All the shades were drawn. She was alone.

“Yikes,” she said aloud to no one, “what’s wrong with me?” Exhaustion, she told herself. Post-resignation depression. Not enough work. She had lots of excuses, but together they amounted to a pack of lies.

What was wrong with her was Calvin Gilliam.

She thought of his wild hair lifting in the wind, his laugh, the way he walked, packed with energy and sexuality. She thought of their meals together and of how much she enjoyed being around him, arguing, taunting, laughing, talking. And she thought of what a pain she’d been. She regretted that now. Yet he seemed more intrigued by her faults than put off by them. It was the challenge she presented, of course, nothing more.

“You need a job,” she said, and started up toward her cottage. She wasn’t going to get one sitting in Maine and having picnics... and moping.

Auntie was right; it was the fate of Killibrew women to fall for rogues. “It’s in your genes,” she’d said. Juniper added silently, Like a disease.
